2010, Day 181 - Wide angle wandering

I often forget how fun and unconventional it can be to use a wide angle lens. It can distort perspective and allow for a larger context. Funny how you can have something that you take for granted until you pick it up and start to use it again then realize how much you've been missing out on.

2010, Day 180 - Succulent

On my way to a meeting this afternoon I noticed a house with a great rock garden so I pulled over to take a closer look. In the parking strip (the bit of grass that serves as a buffer between the sidewalk and the street) they had black river rock and lots of red and green succulents in bloom.

2010, Day 179 - Hell

I was recently given a gift card by some very generous friends and that I great appreciate. The only drawback is that to redeem it I had to go to the mall. It is a place I try to avoid when at all possible but since (and my nifty purchases were already back in the car) I was there I decided to try to appreciate the architecture. Yes, it is a little clinical but look at the ceilings, those lines are interesting, fluid and sharp at the same time.

2010, Day 178 - Peeping flowers

Today there was a greyhound event at Portland Nursery and I went along to capture the event. Unfortunately nothing looks all that good with the noon sun beating down on it so the dogs were hot and tired but the flowers were nice. Look at all that pollen! Now stop, that's perverted! What would your garden think?!?

2010, Day 177 - Darby update

As my loyal followers will remember seven weeks ago Darby lost a leg to cancer. His people had a long day today so I have lunch and dinner duty. It's always a pleasure to see Darby and his insane buddy Parker and today was no exception. I found it a little hot even though it was only in the mid-seventies but the boys loved it and spent as much time as I would let them relaxing on the patio.

2010, Day 176 - A little flutter

I was running errands and saw a stand of small thistles with lots of small movement so I grabbed my camera and found a couple butterflies flitting from flower to flower.

I've been falling in love with wide angle perspectives again, I even like the little bit of flare at the top of the picture below.

I was walking home from an appointment, camera in hand, and these vibrant little flowers caught my eye so I paused to take a few pictures.

2010, Day 173 - Blue and gold

So I decided to take a walk along the railroad tracks this morning because the sun was shining and I thought the light and the lines would be interesting but instead I found some yellow flowers and thought they would contrast nicely with the blue sky.

2010, Day 171 - Broaden your horizons

I start this posting with an photograph taken on the Burnside bridge while waiting for river traffic to pass. Despite the weather it is still beautiful in the Pacific Northwest so take a moment to appreciate the beauty around you.

Another rainy Sunday but the difference was brunch with friends and a bit of a spectacle. Today is Portland's Gay Pride and after brunch we watched a bit of the parade. I'm normally not much of a parade person, they all seem the same and this was no different but the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence caught my eye (they always do). They're a non-profit organization that focuses on awareness and assistance to the gay community, plus they've got great presence. Who says that charity isn't glamorous?

2010, Day 170 - Capacity

My project today was (and still is as of this posting) increasing the storage capacity of my desktop. It's amazing how quickly a hard disk fills when you are shooting 21.1 megapixel RAW files. Out with the old and in with the new, not literally as I already have six hard disks in my desktop, I will soon be looking for a good RAID enclosure but until then a single external disk will do.

2010, Day 168 - Lily

Today's duties included dropping by a house to visit with the folks setting up for an estate sale. You've got to get the personal property out before the house can be sold! Anywho, Jackie brought her happy puppy Lily. She's a happy greeter, alerting Jackie and Carol to the arrival of any visitors.

Also included in this post is Hubert's new foot. He got his bandages off today after having a chronically problematic amputated. For an obnoxious little man he certainly good when it comes to leaving his wounds alone.

2010, Day 166 - Mock orange

With all the rain the mock oranges have been slow to bloom but now they're in full glory. They get their name from the clean sweet smell of the flowers, it really permeates the back yard and the flowers are delicate and numerous.

2010, Day 162 - Greyhound Gardens

Today was a travel day and on my way south to visit family in California I stopped off at my friend Terri's house to visit Greyhound Gardens. She and her partner Karen are totally crazy greyhound people and I've known them for almost seven years. Many of their hounds are special to me and I was able to meed the newest members of their pack.

A friend of mine is a painted and former Air Force Officer. With that being the case his favorite subjects are aeronautical and historically significant. This is his most recent work, two spy planes, one manned and the other unmanned. He asked me to photograph it for reproduction and this is the result.

2010, Day 159 - Linzmeier farm

A few short months ago I helped my friend Jared and Deanna to purchase a nice home on a few acres in Estacada. They've taken to country life quickly and have chickens, goats, greyhounds, cats and a nice vegetable garden. I went out to visit them for the first time since helping them to move and it was a lot of fun. Animals everywhere and good company!
