2010, Day 273 - Roots

Today was the last day of the Sunnyside Farmers Market for 2010. Fall is here and although the days have been nice recently the weather is starting to show its capricious nature. Autumn veggies are my favorites; sweet potatoes, apples, squash, leeks, carrots - all those root crops that have so much flavor and finish off the summer with wonderful comforting food.

2010, Day 272 - Annex

I met with my friend Choy at the Stumptown Annex to discuss my upcoming trip to Thailand. Choy is the genius that helped my sister Laura and me to plan a trip to Bali in 2008 (he owns Jalan Jalan Asia, if you are going to travel to SE Asia I highly recommend his services). Anywho, they started a tasting at the Annex so I snapped a couple shots, it is a really neat space!

2010, Day 271 - Shelob snacking

With our odd weather this year the spider hatch was late and very prolific. Today I found a spider who spun its web right above some flowers getting fat dining on bees. Even with a stinger and many comrades this bee wasn't lucky enough to escape Shelob's web.

2010, Day 270 - Pinstriped tux

I realize it has been a while since I've updated everyone on Johan. He is WONDERFUL! Johan is a very sweet gentle boy who loves to meet new people. The neighbors are already some of his favorite people and he stops in their driveway whenever we walk past. In the evening he races to join me in bed and he has to be touching me to get to sleep. It is so different to have a normal dog in the house again that I'm amazed by it!

2010, Day 269 - Seeds of change

Fall is here and it announced itself in typical Portland style today by raining lightly on and off all day. It was a nice changed from the 80+ degrees it was yesterday which just seemed too plain hot. With the long winter, late spring and mild summer we've had the sunflowers are still blooming and most aren't even ready to have their seeds harvested yet.

2010, Day 268 - Laurelhurst evening

I wanted to check out the noise levels at high ISO on this camera for a while and I took it for a spin this evening. The results look pretty good to me.

2010, Day 267 - Waiting...

I was walking down Division and I saw a woman across the street in a bus shelter waiting for her bus. Her body language made her look bored and maybe a little uncomfortable or defensive. For whatever reason she caught my eye.

2010, Day 266 - Red velvet

Well, blogger still hasn't taken the original blog off its spam watch list so I am still posting to my ghetto blog in the hope that my original is restored soon.

I don't know what this is but I love the soft velvety texture. When I was trying to find the proper angle I discovered a hitchhiker so I included him in today's photos...

2010, Day 265 - Lounge Lizard

For some reason my blog got flagged as spam so while I am trying to get Blogspot to reactivate it this will be its temporary home. I guess my traffic was unusual or some kind of bullsh*t like that.

Anywho, I stopped off at Lounge Lizard on Hawthorne today. They have a great selection of 50s, 60s and 70s vintage furniture, lighting and paraphernalia. Want to embrace the heritage of your ranch? This is the place to shop!

2010, Day 263 - Sauvie Island Bridge

Despite frequent trips to Sauvie Island I've never taken the time to photograph the bridge itself. However, this morning I had a little extra time to I parked my car and ran out to the middle of the bridge between lights and this is what I captured.

2010, Day 261 - Treasure hunt

I love old things, they have their own life and history, a character that you don't find in new things today. Most of what we buy today isn't really meant to last whereas something made forty, fifty, sixty years ago was meant to last a lifetime. Today's photos come from Monticello Antique Marketplace, a great antique mall with rented stalls to various vendors.

2010, Day 260 - Leaves

I put my own spin on today's Daily Shoot assignment.

Showcase the beauty of living foliage! Make a photo of a single leaf or an entire "greenscape" today.

So I fully intended to shoot leaves today but it was one of those days where it rained but only when I went outside, otherwise it was dry. On my way back from a meeting I was driving down Stark and I saw Portland Nursery coming up so I pulled over and decided that because they sell plants I might find a leaf or two worth of photographing there. Unfortunately that's when the assignment kind of went out the window because as my regular readers know full well I like nothing more than flowers and bugs and I found both!

2010, Day 259 - the city is burning

I wish I knew what the City of Portland uses the Fire Alarm Telegraph building for these days. The vintage is great and it would be awesome to get inside just to see what it is like. It is disappointing when great architecture is hidden from sight.

2010, Day 258 - the Flappy Duck

If you know what show the title of today's blog posting comes from I'll buy you a cookie.

Anywho, I was on my usual wanderings trying to be productive and I stopped to check out a new food cart park. There was nothing there that caught my eye but I did walk past Slappy Cakes. They were closed, kind of a breakfast and lunch only establishment, but I took a picture nonetheless. On the weekends the line is HUGE for this place but I didn't know what it was or why it is so popular. Yelp! to the rescue! Apparently it is one of those places where you cook your own pancakes. Judging by the reviews most people go for the novelty because there are frequent complaints about the poor service. Oh well, I love the orange highlights and the natural light so the atmosphere looks rather nice...

2010, Day 257 - Camouflage

I went to the zoo this morning, I haven't been in months but now that school is back in session I decided to risk it and it paid off. The leopard was out front, the egrets were hunting and the wild pigs were waiting to greet the visitors.

Time again for the Belmont Street Fair. I live two blocks off of Belmont which means I don't have to look for parking. Although it was still early there were lots of people, live music, vendors and community outreach.
