I took this picture a few weeks ago of our beloved Oregon grape flowering. Not a member of the grape family at all, Oregon grape is more closely related to holly. The leaves have the same spiky shape but without the rigidity of most hollies. They flower abundantly in the early spring and after there is a small black berry from which it derives its name. Below is pictured the state flower of Oregon.
