Back to my hike in Forest Park last week... It was hot today, 86 degrees and rather humid, so I was reliving the pleasant breeze and cool air under the canopy of maple trees and evergreens. You could smell the soil as the moisture unlocked its fragrance so the walk along the gentle rolling path was quite pleasant. Ahh, the nostalgia of cooler days only last week!

2011, Day 184 - Unfurled
Another photo from my walk in Forest Park and my obsession with ferns continues. I used a little flash to separate the target frond from the rest of the background.

2011, Day 181 - Feathered canopy
This afternoon was a typical one in the Pacific northwest, overcast with a light mist but because the rain was so light I decided to take a trip to Forest Park. My favorite starting point in Cannon Trail, it isn't very long but it is sparsely traveled so it allows for a feeling of solitude. The damp weather intensified the smell of earth and the sweet aroma of decaying pine needles.
The ferns are so big now I had to take the opportunity to lay under their fronds for a few minutes and just listen to the trees. There is a kind of peace in a clearing of ferns that you can find nowhere else...

2010, Day 85 - Cannon Trail
I'm rediscovering the joy of thinking big so I broke out a nice wide angle lens and took a little hike in Forest Park. When I arrived there were only scattered clouds but in short order the clouds moved in and it started to rain. I stuck it out for a little bit but retreated quickly before the trailed turned completely to mud.
