Tonight we go back in time to revisit the nuclear power plant at Satsop. It was so much fun exploring and this room was fascinating. To me it looked like someone excised a vital organ severing all the arteries and leaving in its place an empty shell and the suggestion of what once was. It is a little sad but also endlessly fascinating; at the time I think we were all so overwhelmed by the sheer size of the plant that many of the questions the spring to mind now were just drowned out was the sense of awe.
Oh well, maybe we can arrange a return visit in the spring...

2012, Day 294 - Junction
I wish I had the wherewithal to ask about this room. It is a roofless alcove with the remnants of I-beams and pipes cut off at the walls. Why build a room where everything comes together? Why reinforce with I-beams? Was this where steam traveled to make power or was this a junction on the way to one of the cooling towers? Would there have been valves and pumps here? I suspect that the reason the room is now empty is for the value of the scrap metal. Maybe I will remember to ask if I make it back...

2012, Day 121 - Oxidized
Yesterday's Portland Google+ Photowalk was a lot of fun. It was great to meet new people and exciting to see some familiar faces from that last walk. We had the pleasure of wandering around the NW industrial area and I have already seen a bunch of great photos shared. This is the first I will share, I think all this is scrap steel as there was an enormous crate of it waiting to be melted down and put to a new and exciting use. If you look in the shadows there is a little glimpse of turquoise of unoxidized metal.

2012, Day 117 - Corrugated
More grunge from yesterday's scouting captured in a brief break from the rain. I decided to play up the textures and used OnOne's Perfect Effects 3 by applying the Brocade and Tea Stained filters. Then a little selective focus and levels adjustments. Sometimes strong lines and texture is all you need for an interesting photograph.

2011, Day 335 - Time travel
I've actually thought about this and other photos from this trip recently. This was taken in Cordova over four years ago and in that short time my ability to process a RAW file has improved dramatically. If I recall correctly this is a fish processing facility but what caught my eye was the clouds, the signs of neglect, the rust and the fantastic backdrop; essentially there is a lot of texture in this image so it is a visual feast.
Sadly I have not had time to return to Cordova in the intervening years. My father goes annual to fish for salmon and 2007 was the first and last time I've been even though he has been generous enough to invited me every year since. It was a lot of fun and because the fish are so plentiful it doesn't take much skill which means that it is still quite a challenge for me.
It is always worth looking back into your archives at photos that you might have forgotten about. This one is a gem, one that I remembered fondly but like even more now that I have had a chance to rework it. What amazes me most is that this is a single image, one that was really well exposed by pure luck.

2011, Day 046 - Peeling
Years ago I worked at Rejuvenation. Although I wasn't there for long I was attracted by their commitment to old houses so when I was passing their salvage yard today I couldn't restrain myself from stopping to take a look.
This is a photograph of paint peeling off of an old cast iron sink.

2010, Day 312 - Damaged
This morning was not a good one for Stubbs. Somehow my sweet old man tore a chunk out of his foot when we were walking out the door for our morning stroll. He never made a sound, I just noticed he was limping so I picked up the offending foot. Initially I didn't see the damage, it was dark and there was no blood to speak of but upon closer inspection I was shocked. The poor guy!
Broken, I kept him out only long enough to get a little relief and then put him in the house while I walked the other two. When we got back I flushed the wound, started him on antibiotics and called the vet. Unfortunately this is just going to be one of those injuries that takes time to heal.
Afterwards I went to the store and on the way I found peeling paint and rust, two of my friend Terri's favorite things. I am off to baby the old guy...

2010, Day 298 - Antiqued
I was over at one of my listings today and I was drawn to the shape, texture and patina of the turn on the hose bib. You can see the years of wear as hands have turned it on and off, the cast iron has smoothed and corroded. And, as a bonus, Johan relaxing... He is such a goofy boy!

2010, Day 253 - Horizontal mambo
Back to the Daily Shoot! Today's assignment was:
Find a strong series of horizontal lines or elements and make a photograph of it today.
These are the things I found on my wanderings.

2010, Day 250 - If you build it
It was a busy work day, lots of running around but between my appointments I had time to make a stop at the ReBuilding Center, a series of connected warehouses offering used building materials and information on sustainable construction practices. It is a fantastic resource full of great deals, innovative ideas and helpful people.

2010, Day 38 - Grocery Walk
On my way to the grocery store there were signs of spring coupled with the vestiges of winter. I love the contrast.

This next photo doesn't count as part of the challenge, I took it on 02/04/2010 but didn't use it because I wanted to feature different photos that it didn't mesh with. That said, it's another photo for Terri whose love of rust made me think she would like it.
